Abstract

The city of Asunción contains a significant collection of historic buildings that represent a valuable cultural and architectural heritage in Paraguay. Most of this heritage was built in the 17th and 18th centuries during different periods of Guaraní tradition and culture, having suffered progressive deterioration and the emergence of construction pathologies over time. Although there are major efforts by public administrations to preserve local heritage, there are still deficiencies in efficient diagnostic models that allow the development of guidelines for conservation planning of such historical monuments. This article presents the development of a multicriteria model as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the conservation status of six heritage buildings in the city. The study defines three relevant diagnostic aspects: aesthetic value, structural condition, and social impact. As a result, a global satisfaction index was obtained for each of the reviewed buildings, enabling the identification of potential levels of deterioration. The results of the study allow for the classification of the buildings in order of priority; that is, it was possible to quantitatively determine which buildings require urgent intervention. This provides an innovative methodological component for decision-making by public administration in the processes of restoration and conservation of historical monuments.
