OCCLUSAL SPLINTS: MAIN TYPES AND THEIR INDICATIONS: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Occlusal splints are removable intraoral devices with a therapeutic function, widely used in Dentistry as adjuncts for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), bruxism, and occlusal stabilization. The appropriate choice of device contributes to therapeutic effectiveness, comfort, and protection of orofacial structures. This study aimed to identify the main types of occlusal splints and their respective clinical indications. An integrative literature review was conducted using the Google Scholar and SciELO databases, covering the period from 2016 to 2025. Seven splint modalities were identified: Stabilizing (Michigan), Anterior Repositioning, Anterior Bite, Posterior Bite, Distraction (Pivoting), Hydrostatic, and Nobile (Gelb). The Michigan splint has become the gold standard for myofascial disorders and bruxism due to its biological safety. In contrast, partial coverage and repositioning splints proved effective in acute cases, but with a high risk of permanent occlusal alterations, such as tooth extrusion, if used for prolonged periods. It is concluded that the success of treatment depends on the correct indication of each device, with a conservative and multidisciplinary approach being essential to ensure the functional integrity of the stomatognathic system.
