USE OF ACUPUNCTURE IN VETERINARY OTOLOGY: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Recognized by the World Health Organization for its excellent results, acupuncture is an ancient therapy that prevents, treats and cures pathologies through the insertion of fine needles in certain regions of the body known as acupuncture points (WHO, 2002). The present study addresses the use of acupuncture in veterinary otology. Objective: To describe the use of acupuncture to treat veterinary otological conditions. Method: A review of the scientific literature was carried out in the Scielo databases. Works published between 1976 and 2023 were selected. Results: Acupuncture can be an option for people suffering from otological conditions, demonstrating clinical efficacy in improving quality of life, in addition to representing a form of low-cost treatment (KIM ET AL., 2012). Conclusion: The development of the present study enabled an analysis of the effect of acupuncture on veterinary otological disorders and its possible use as a complementary method in the treatment of changes that affect the ear, in order to improve patients' quality of life. Acupuncture becomes a complementary way to help treat animals that suffer from ear problems. However, more studies are needed in the area to obtain more consistent data in order to verify other possible effects of acupuncture on the ear.
